Course attended

Introduction to Word processing |
|||||||||||||
| What did you enjoy most about the course? | I enjoyed learning how to use Word to create documents, I was able to create and type my CV, and I learned how to use attachments in email so I ended up emailing my CV and anything and everything else that I created! Apart from that it was great meeting other people like myself who were learning computer skills. I had a good laugh and good chats with the other students and also with the teachers, my bottle had gone on the first day because I hadn’t been in a classroom in years, but the tutors were really friendly and put me at ease and the classroom atmosphere was very relaxed which made attending the course enjoyable as well.

I have a bit of a problem with short sightedness and can get some eye-strain and headaches if I use a screen too long or read too much small print. I told the tutor this on the first day and he gave me the paper exercises with larger print and also showed me how to make the text on the screen bigger and this was a great help to me right through the course. | |||||||||||||
| How has this course benefited you? (personal, family, work)
|
The tutors taught me how to use Microsoft Word and how to use the Internet and email properly so I was able to write a CV and apply for work by searching job websites and sending my CV with cover letters, something I’d never been able to do before. These days you need to at least know the basics of how to use computers, or you miss out and get left behind This was the main benefit to me and the main thing I’ll take from the course

| What would you say to a friend who is thinking about joining a course? | I would recommend the course to my friends or to anyone who is looking to update their knowledge of computers. You can learn how to properly look for work and apply for jobs using the internet and email. The tutors are very friendly and you’ll meet other people in the same situation as yourself | |||||||||||||

What did you achieve?
|
I got a level 1 certificate in Word Processing |
|||||||||||||
| What is next for you? | I've carried on going to the EDT centre as I want to get the full icdl qualification. Its at level 2 and teaches you how to use spreadsheets, how to create presentations and databases as well as teaching you more about the internet and word processing. I want this as proof to employers that I know my way around a computer and also to keep my confidence up and to build on what I've already learned. | |||||||||||||

Joe Johnson

I’ve been on the course for the past 4 months and learned a wide range of IT skills, eg, creating Word documents, making cards and posters, emailing anything and everything and most importantly it helped me find work.
What got me started was receiving an LMH booklet through the post and seeing an advert about a tenant who’d found work. I had been unemployed for over 12 months after being made redundant from a long term job with Royal Mail. Reading the booklet got me thinking that maybe I should get in touch and try and do something to boost my confidence and my chances of getting a job.
Right from the start the staff were great with me and convinced me to give the IT course a go – and as well as doing the course with Kevin twice a week (at The Observatory and Dalemeadow which is right on my doorstep) I’ve been on the V.I.P. course which helps people back into work – I’ve gained a First Aid Certificate – I’m about to start CSCS course AND I’ve started a job at Sainsbury’s! It’s the busiest I’ve been since leaving work and I’ve enjoyed the whole experience.
